[PRIMO Tech-a-Break] Stop Complaining About “No Tasks”: Shift Your Meeting Mindset to Become a Context-Driven Dev

Let’s be honest. How often do we, as developers, walk out of a meeting room complaining to our friends: “Why did they call me in? There’s no task for me,” or “We talked for ages, but what do I actually have to code? Such a waste of time.”

We tend to expect that a Good Meeting = a meeting that ends with a perfectly written Ticket Spec, telling us exactly which file to edit and which line to change. But little do we know… that is the exact mindset keeping us trapped as just a “Coder,” not a “Software Engineer.”

In reality, an effective meeting isn’t about spoon-feeding you tasks; it’s about syncing “Context.”

Today, I want to invite everyone to Refactor our thoughts. Let's discuss why we should stop craving tasks and start looking for "The Why" in the meeting room instead.

 

1. “Context, Not Control” (Stop Waiting for Orders, Start Seeking Business Logic)

This concept draws inspiration from Netflix’s culture.

  • The Exception: We often get annoyed when Business or PMs explain the “big picture” at length. We think, “Can you just skip to the order?”

  • The Fix: Calm down. The fact that they aren’t giving direct orders but explaining the background means they are providing “Context.” Your job isn’t to wait for a command but to Inject that Context into your brain.

  • Why it matters: If you only know the Task (What), you code strictly to order. But if you know the Context (Why), you might design a solution even better than what the PM imagined.

  • Challenge: Stop acting like a Function waiting for Parameters. Act like an AI that understands the User’s Intention. If you’re in a meeting and don’t know “Why are we doing this?”—don’t ask for a task yet. Ask: “What is the Business Goal here?”

2. The “API Contract” Approach (Clear Input/Output, but Output isn’t always Code)

  • The Exception: “Meeting over, no Action Plan for Devs” -> return null;

  • The Fix: Don’t assume the output of a meeting must always be a Coding Task. Sometimes, the output is “Clarity”or a “Decision.”

  • How to: Treat meetings like an API Call.

    • Input: Parse the Agenda before entering (Pre-processing).

    • Process: Debate with Logic and Data.

    • Output: Conclude on “Which direction are we going?” If a meeting ends without a coding task but concludes that “We shouldn’t build this feature yet,” that is a Successful Meeting. It saves the team effort and prevents Dead Code.

3. “First Principles Thinking” (Find the Root Cause, Don’t Hardcode Requirements)

  • The Exception: Receiving a vague requirement like “The client wants a green button here.” -> We blindly build it. -> Later, we find out the User didn’t want a button; they wanted a shortcut.

  • The Fix: Apply Elon Musk’s First Principles. In a meeting, your job isn’t just to implement requirements but to help the team Debug the idea from minute one.

  • Challenge: Train yourself to be “Skeptical” (constructively).

    • Don’t rush to ask, “Which library should I use?”

    • Ask, “What is the User’s real problem?” Sometimes, when we truly understand The Why, we might propose a Tech solution that is simpler, faster, and doesn’t require that green button at all.

Friends, complaining that a meeting is “full of fluff” might be because we don’t know how to Filter for the meat. A quality meeting isn’t a Task Factory; it’s a space for Context Alignment.

  • Stop waiting to be spoon-fed work.

  • Train your skills to catch “The Why.”

You will find that a meeting with No Tasks is actually a golden opportunity to use your Engineer brain to design the most correct system from the start. (But if you encounter a meeting with neither Context nor Solution… well, “Good luck with that, my friend.”)
